Cleveland Browns

The Cleveland Browns began play in 1946 as a charter member of the All-America Football Conference (AAFC), led by legendary coach and co-founder Paul Brown. The Browns dominated the AAFC from the beginning, winning all four of the league's championships from 1946 through 1949. In 1950, Cleveland joined the NFL and immediately continued its success, winning the NFL Championship in its first NFL season.

The Browns have won eight league championships in their history — four AAFC Championships and four NFL Championships. Their NFL titles came in 1950, 1954, 1955 and 1964. Cleveland reached the NFL Championship Game repeatedly during the 1950s, with legendary quarterback Otto Graham leading the team to three NFL championships. The 1964 Browns later captured the franchise's fourth NFL title, and Cleveland remains one of the most historically successful franchises of the pre-Super Bowl era.

Browns history is filled with legendary players. Otto Graham became one of the greatest quarterbacks in professional football history, while Jim Brown is widely regarded as one of the greatest running backs ever to play the game. Other icons from the championship years include Lou Groza, Marion Motley, Bill Willis, Dante Lavelli, Len Ford and Ray Renfro. Later generations produced unforgettable Browns such as Ozzie Newsome, Bernie Kosar, Clay Matthews, Brian Sipe, Hanford Dixon, Kevin Mack and Joe Thomas.

The Browns have officially retired five jersey numbers: #14 Otto Graham, #32 Jim Brown, #45 Ernie Davis, #46 Don Fleming, and #76 Lou Groza. These retired numbers span several important eras of Cleveland football and honor some of the most influential players in franchise history. The Browns also maintain a Ring of Honor and a Browns Legends Program recognizing additional players, coaches and contributors. The 2026 Browns Legends class includes Brian Brennan, Alex Mack and Lou Rymkus, further expanding the franchise's long list of honored figures.
