Detroit Lions
The Detroit Lions trace their history to the Portsmouth Spartans, who began play in 1930 in Portsmouth, Ohio. In 1934, the franchise moved to Detroit and became the Detroit Lions, beginning a long and important chapter in NFL history. The Lions have proudly carried the Detroit Lions name ever since, building one of the oldest traditions in professional football.
The Lions have won four NFL world championships, capturing titles in 1935, 1952, 1953 and 1957. Detroit's dominant teams of the 1950s won three championships in six seasons, making that era one of the greatest periods in franchise history. The Lions have not yet won a Super Bowl, but they have produced many memorable teams, legendary players and historic moments throughout their long existence.
Detroit's history is filled with unforgettable stars. Early legends such as Earl "Dutch" Clark helped establish the franchise, while the championship teams of the 1950s featured Bobby Layne, Doak Walker and Joe Schmidt. Later generations brought Hall of Fame players such as Lem Barney, Charlie Sanders and Barry Sanders. Other memorable Lions include Billy Sims, Chris Spielman, Herman Moore, Jason Hanson, Calvin Johnson and many more. The modern era has added stars such as Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jared Goff, Penei Sewell and Aidan Hutchinson.
The Lions have officially retired several jersey numbers, including #7 Dutch Clark, #20 Lem Barney, Billy Sims and Barry Sanders, #22 Bobby Layne, #37 Doak Walker, #56 Joe Schmidt, and #85 Chuck Hughes. The retirement of #20 is especially unique because it is permanently associated with three outstanding Lions players from different generations. The franchise also honors many additional legends through its team Hall of Fame and other historical recognitions.
