Denver Broncos
The Denver Broncos began play in 1960 as one of the original members of the American Football League. When the AFL and NFL merged in 1970, the Broncos became part of the NFL and have proudly carried the Denver Broncos name throughout their history. From the early AFL years to decades of success in the NFL, the Broncos have developed one of the most recognizable identities in professional football.
Denver has won three Super Bowl Championships, winning Super Bowl XXXII after the 1997 season, Super Bowl XXXIII after the 1998 season, and Super Bowl 50 after the 2015 season. The Broncos' back-to-back championships in 1997 and 1998 established one of the greatest periods in franchise history, while the 2015 team became the third championship squad in team history behind a legendary defense and Super Bowl 50 MVP Von Miller.
Broncos history is filled with unforgettable players. Floyd Little became one of the earliest great stars in franchise history, while the legendary Orange Crush defense of the late 1970s featured players such as Randy Gradishar, Tom Jackson and Louis Wright. The great offenses of the 1990s were led by John Elway, Terrell Davis, Shannon Sharpe and Rod Smith. Later generations produced stars including Champ Bailey, Steve Atwater, Von Miller, Demaryius Thomas and Peyton Manning.
The Broncos have officially retired three jersey numbers: #7 John Elway, #18 Frank Tripucka, and #44 Floyd Little. Number 18 also has a special place in modern Broncos history because Peyton Manning wore it from 2012 through 2015 with the blessing of Frank Tripucka. The number returned to retirement after Manning's departure. Many other legendary players and contributors are honored in the Denver Broncos Ring of Fame, which recognizes those who played major roles in shaping the franchise.
