Carolina Panthers

The Carolina Panthers began play in 1995 as an expansion franchise, becoming the first NFL team in the Carolinas. The Panthers have proudly carried the Carolina Panthers name throughout their history and quickly established a competitive identity. In only their second season, Carolina won the NFC West and advanced to the NFC Championship Game, an extraordinary achievement for such a young franchise.

The Panthers have reached the Super Bowl twice. Carolina won the NFC Championship after the 2003 season and advanced to Super Bowl XXXVIII, where they narrowly lost to the New England Patriots. The Panthers returned to the Super Bowl after the 2015 season following a dominant 15-1 regular season, but fell to the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl 50. Carolina therefore remains in search of its first Super Bowl Championship.

Panthers history is filled with memorable players. Linebacker Sam Mills became the emotional foundation of the franchise's early teams, while quarterback Steve Beuerlein helped lead the Panthers to their first playoff victory. The 2003 NFC Championship team featured stars such as Jake Delhomme, Steve Smith Sr., Julius Peppers and Muhsin Muhammad. Later generations produced franchise icons including Luke Kuechly, Cam Newton, Jordan Gross, Thomas Davis and Greg Olsen. The modern era has added new stars and continues to write the next chapter of Carolina football.

The Panthers have officially retired only #51 Sam Mills. Mills was one of the original Panthers and became the cornerstone of the team's defense during its first three seasons. After his playing career, he joined the coaching staff and became forever associated with the Panthers' “Keep Pounding” identity. The franchise also honors many other legends through the Panthers Hall of Honor, including Mike McCormack, Wesley Walls, Jake Delhomme, Jordan Gross, Steve Smith Sr., Muhsin Muhammad and Julius Peppers.
