Kansas City Chiefs
The Kansas City Chiefs began as the Dallas Texans, founded by Lamar Hunt as a charter member of the American Football League in 1959. The team played its first season in 1960, won the 1962 AFL Championship, and then moved to Kansas City and became the Kansas City Chiefs in 1963. The franchise joined the NFL in 1970 when the AFL and NFL merged. Since then, the Chiefs have become one of the most successful and recognizable teams in professional football.
The Chiefs have won three AFL Championships and four Super Bowl Championships. Kansas City defeated the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV following the 1969 season, then returned to the top of the NFL decades later by winning Super Bowl LIV after the 2019 season, Super Bowl LVII after the 2022 season, and Super Bowl LVIII after the 2023 season. The modern Chiefs have been led by stars such as Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, building one of the most remarkable championship runs in recent NFL history.
Chiefs history is filled with legendary players from every era. Len Dawson led Kansas City to its first Super Bowl championship, while Willie Lanier, Bobby Bell, Buck Buchanan and Jan Stenerud were central figures during the great AFL era. Later generations produced defensive legend Derrick Thomas, running back Jamaal Charles, tight end Tony Gonzalez, and many other unforgettable players. Today's generation includes stars such as Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and other key members of the Chiefs' championship teams.
