Washington Commanders
The Washington Commanders are one of the NFL's oldest franchises, founded in 1932 as the Boston Braves. The team became the Boston Redskins in 1933, moved to Washington in 1937 and became the Washington Redskins. In 2020, the team adopted the name Washington Football Team, before becoming the Washington Commanders in 2022.
The franchise has won 5 world championships: NFL Championships in 1937 and 1942, followed by Super Bowl victories after the 1982, 1987 and 1991 seasons. Washington's three Super Bowl championships remain an important part of the franchise's proud history.
Washington has been home to many legendary players, including Sammy Baugh, Sonny Jurgensen, Bobby Mitchell, Charley Taylor, John Riggins, Art Monk, Darrell Green, Sean Taylor, Doug Williams and many others.
Retired Numbers
The franchise has officially retired the numbers of six players:
- #9 – Sonny Jurgensen
- #21 – Sean Taylor
- #28 – Darrell Green
- #33 – Sammy Baugh
- #49 – Bobby Mitchell
- #81 – Art Monk
The Commanders have also announced that John Riggins' No. 44 will be retired on November 8, 2026, when Washington hosts the Los Angeles Rams. Until the ceremony takes place, his number is considered scheduled for retirement rather than officially retired.
The franchise also honors many legendary players, coaches and contributors through the Washington Ring of Fame, which includes more than 50 members from every era of Washington football.
