Buffalo Bills

The Buffalo Bills began play in 1960 as one of the original franchises of the American Football League. Founded by owner Ralph C. Wilson Jr., the Bills have proudly carried the Buffalo Bills name throughout their history. When the AFL and NFL merged in 1970, Buffalo became part of the NFL and continued building one of the most passionate and recognizable football traditions in professional sports.

The Bills won two AFL Championships, in 1964 and 1965, establishing the franchise as one of the dominant teams of the AFL era. Buffalo later created one of the most remarkable runs in NFL history by winning four consecutive AFC Championships from 1990 through 1993. The Bills appeared in four straight Super Bowls during that period, a feat that remains unmatched by any other team, although Buffalo was unable to capture a Super Bowl Championship.

Buffalo's history is filled with unforgettable players. Quarterback Jim Kelly became the leader of the legendary 1990s teams, while running back Thurman Thomas and wide receiver Andre Reed formed the heart of one of the NFL's most prolific offenses. Defensive stars such as Bruce Smith, Cornelius Bennett, Darryl Talley and Steve Tasker helped define the Bills' championship era. Earlier generations featured AFL legends including Jack Kemp, Elbert Dubenion, Cookie Gilchrist and Joe DeLamielleure. More recently, Buffalo has been led by stars such as Josh Allen, Stefon Diggs and other key players of the modern era.

The Bills have officially retired two jersey numbers: #12 Jim Kelly and #78 Bruce Smith. Kelly's No. 12 was retired in 2001, while Smith's No. 78 was retired in 2016. Other legendary numbers such as #32 O.J. Simpson, #34 Thurman Thomas, #44 Elbert Dubenion, #66 Billy Shaw, and #83 Andre Reed have traditionally been protected or rarely issued out of respect for their historical importance. The Buffalo Bills Wall of Fame provides another major way for the franchise to permanently honor its greatest players, coaches and contributors.
