Miami Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins were founded in 1966 as the ninth expansion franchise of the American Football League and became part of the NFL in 1970 following the AFL-NFL merger. Unlike many longtime NFL franchises, the Dolphins have kept the same team name throughout their history. Miami quickly established itself as one of the most recognizable teams in professional football, especially during the remarkable era led by head coach Don Shula.

The Dolphins have won five AFC Championships and two Super Bowl Championships, winning Super Bowl VII after the 1972 season and Super Bowl VIII after the 1973 season. The 1972 Dolphins remain the only team in NFL history to complete an entire season undefeated and untied, finishing 17-0 after winning the Super Bowl. That legendary team, built around a dominant defense and a powerful running game, remains one of the most celebrated teams in football history.

Miami's long history is filled with legendary players. Quarterback Bob Griese led the Dolphins during their championship era, while fullback Larry Csonka became one of the most famous power runners of his generation. Later, Dan Marino became one of the greatest pure passers in NFL history, and defensive superstar Jason Taylor became one of the most feared pass rushers to ever wear the Dolphins uniform. Other unforgettable Dolphins include Nick Buoniconti, Dwight Stephenson, Zach Thomas, Mark Clayton, Mark Duper, Nat Moore, Paul Warfield and many more.

The Dolphins have officially retired three jersey numbers: #12 Bob Griese, #13 Dan Marino, and #39 Larry Csonka. Other legendary numbers, including #54 Zach Thomas and #99 Jason Taylor, have not been officially retired, but remain closely associated with these franchise icons. The team's Ring of Honor also recognizes many of the players, coaches and contributors who have made a lasting impact on Dolphins history.
