Houston / Tennessee Oilers
The Tennessee Oilers were a short but important chapter in the history of one of the NFL's oldest franchises. After the Houston Oilers relocated to Tennessee, the team used the Tennessee Oilers name during the 1997 and 1998 NFL seasons. The franchise then retired the Oilers nickname and became the Tennessee Titans in 1999. The Tennessee Oilers were therefore not a separate franchise, but part of the same organization that began as the Houston Oilers and continues today as the Tennessee Titans.
The 1997 season marked the franchise's first year in Tennessee. The team played selected home games in Memphis while preparing for a permanent Nashville home, before playing its 1998 home schedule at Vanderbilt Stadium. Although the Tennessee Oilers era lasted only two seasons, it included several important players who would become central figures in the franchise's later history.
Steve McNair was the most recognizable young star of the Tennessee Oilers era, developing into the franchise's great quarterback and later leading the Titans to Super Bowl XXXIV. Running back Eddie George was another defining figure, becoming one of the most productive runners in franchise history. Defensive stars such as Jevon Kearse and veteran leaders including Keith Bulluck, Blaine Bishop and others also became important parts of the franchise's Tennessee identity.
The Tennessee Oilers did not win a championship during their two-season existence. However, the players who wore the Oilers uniform during this period form an important bridge between the Houston Oilers era and the Tennessee Titans era. The franchise's later honors and retired numbers continue to recognize legends from across this entire history, including Warren Moon, Earl Campbell, Steve McNair, Eddie George, Jim Norton, Mike Munchak, Elvin Bethea and Bruce Matthews.
