Cincinnati Bengals
The Cincinnati Bengals began play in 1968 as an expansion franchise in the American Football League. Founded by legendary coach and football innovator Paul Brown, the Bengals joined the NFL in 1970 when the AFL and NFL merged. The team has proudly carried the Cincinnati Bengals name throughout its history and has developed one of the most distinctive identities in professional football, highlighted by its iconic tiger-striped uniforms and helmets.
The Bengals have won three AFC Championships, reaching the Super Bowl after the 1981, 1988 and 2021 seasons. Cincinnati's first AFC title came in the famous Freezer Bowl against the San Diego Chargers, sending the Bengals to Super Bowl XVI. The team returned to the Super Bowl after the 1988 season and again after the 2021 season, but Cincinnati has not yet captured its first Super Bowl Championship.
Cincinnati history is filled with legendary players. Quarterback Ken Anderson became one of the defining players of the franchise's early era, while Hall of Fame offensive tackle Anthony Muñoz established himself as one of the greatest offensive linemen in NFL history. The 1980s produced unforgettable stars such as Boomer Esiason, Cris Collinsworth, James Brooks and Tim Krumrie. Later generations featured players including Chad Johnson, Carson Palmer, Corey Dillon, Willie Anderson and Geno Atkins. The modern Bengals are led by stars such as Joe Burrow, Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins.
The Bengals have officially retired #54 Bob Johnson, the franchise's first-ever draft selection in 1968. Rather than retiring large numbers of jerseys, Cincinnati has traditionally honored its greatest figures through the Bengals Ring of Honor. Paul Brown, Anthony Muñoz, Ken Anderson, Ken Riley, Willie Anderson, Isaac Curtis, Boomer Esiason, Chad Johnson, Corey Dillon, Tim Krumrie and Dave Lapham are among those honored, with James Brooks and Bob Trumpy scheduled to join the Ring of Honor in 2026.
