Arizona Cardinals
Arizona Cardinals Jerseys – Every Player, Every Era, Every Number
The Arizona Cardinals are the oldest continuously operating professional football franchise in the NFL, with a history dating back to 1898. The organization began in Chicago as the Morgan Athletic Club and later became known as the Normals and the Racine Cardinals before becoming the Chicago Cardinals.
The Cardinals became a charter member of the NFL in 1920. The franchise remained in Chicago until 1960, when it moved to St. Louis and became the St. Louis Cardinals. In 1988, the team relocated to Arizona and initially played as the Phoenix Cardinals. In 1994, the franchise officially became the Arizona Cardinals.
The complete history of the franchise therefore includes the Morgan Athletic Club, Normals, Racine Cardinals, Chicago Cardinals, St. Louis Cardinals, Phoenix Cardinals and Arizona Cardinals. These different names and locations are all part of the history of the same continuous franchise.
During the 1944 season, the Cardinals also combined with the Pittsburgh Steelers as a wartime team known as Card-Pitt. This was a temporary one-season combination caused by player shortages during World War II rather than a permanent franchise name.
The Cardinals have won 2 NFL Championships, in 1925 and 1947. Their first championship came during the Chicago era, while the second came in 1947 when the Cardinals defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 28-21 in the NFL Championship Game.
The Cardinals have won 0 Super Bowl Championships. Their closest Super Bowl appearance came following the 2008 season, when Arizona won the NFC Championship and advanced to Super Bowl XLIII. The Cardinals lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers 27-23 in one of the most memorable Super Bowls in NFL history.
The franchise has been home to generations of legendary players, including Ernie Nevers, Paddy Driscoll, Charley Trippi, Ollie Matson, Larry Wilson, Dan Dierdorf, Roger Wehrli, Jim Hart, Jackie Smith, Aeneas Williams, Kurt Warner, Pat Tillman, Adrian Wilson and Larry Fitzgerald.
Retired Numbers
The Arizona Cardinals have officially retired the jersey numbers of five players whose contributions left a permanent mark on the franchise:
- #8 – Larry Wilson
- #40 – Pat Tillman
- #77 – Stan Mauldin
- #88 – J.V. Cain
- #99 – Marshall Goldberg
Larry Wilson spent his entire 13-year NFL career with the Cardinals and became one of the greatest safeties in league history. Marshall Goldberg was an important member of the 1947 NFL championship team, while Stan Mauldin and J.V. Cain were honored by the franchise after tragically losing their lives during their playing careers.
Pat Tillman became one of the most respected figures in Cardinals history. After establishing himself as an NFL player, Tillman left football to serve in the U.S. Army. The Cardinals later retired his No. 40 in recognition of his life, service and legacy.
Scheduled Retirement – Larry Fitzgerald
The Cardinals have announced that Larry Fitzgerald's No. 11 will be officially retired on October 25, 2026, at halftime of the Cardinals' game against the Denver Broncos. Fitzgerald will also be inducted into the Cardinals Ring of Honor that day.
Fitzgerald spent his entire NFL career with the Cardinals from 2004 through 2020 and established himself as one of the greatest wide receivers in NFL history. He finished his career with 1,432 receptions, 17,492 receiving yards and 121 receiving touchdowns, and he helped lead Arizona to its first Super Bowl appearance following the 2008 season.
